Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Tears of the Kingdom players are going to need to farm Topaz if they want to upgrade armor or fuse weapons, so here's everything there is to know.

Tears of the Kingdom players will want to get into the habit of collecting everything they see. Materials can be used in cooking meals or elixirs, fusion, and upgrading armor. Gems, such as Topaz, are used for armor enhancement and fusion, but throwing them into a meal will yield unsatisfactory results.

Topaz are rarer than Opal and Amber, but they're not common enough to drop from regular ore deposits. Like any other gem, Topaz have elemental powers, which can be brought out through fusion. Because of this, Tears of the Kingdom players may be wondering if they should keep their Topaz in the inventory, or sell it to a merchant.

Topaz can be mined from Rare Ore Deposits or Stone Talus (Rare). There are also some treasure chests with a Topaz in the Gerudo Region (such as the Gerudo Shelter) that are locked behind a puzzle. Players can also take a Topaz-fused weapon to Pelison in Tarrey Town to separate the fused item (i.e, the Topaz) from the melee weapon. The cost for this is 20 Rupees.

Players can find Rare Ore Deposits in caves. Since they're rare, they're more likely to appear in the deepest parts of caves rather than by the entrance. Rare Ore Deposits have golden ore embedded in them.

It's difficult to pin down which cave has a Rare Ore Deposit, so players will want to look in areas that have a lot of caves. A recommended place is the Eldin Region, specifically north of Goron City near YunoboCo HQ. There are caves everywhere, and most of these lead to Shrines of Light.

However, if Link goes into the caves in Eldin, he'll need flame-resistant gear. Players can buy a piece of the Flamebreaker Set at the armor store in Goron City, or at YunoboCo HQ. Another way to prevent Link from catching on fire is to take a Flameproof Elixir. These are made by cooking a monster part with a Fireproof Lizard or a Smotherwing Butterfly. Since Smotherwing Butterflies are rarer, cooking Fireproof Lizards is generally preferred.

If TotK players are feeling confident, they can track down Stone Talus (Rare) in Hyrule. There are also some in The Depths, but since most monsters in The Depths will inflict gloom-damage on Link, this isn't recommended - especially for beginners.

Luckily, there's a Rare Stone Talus in the Tabantha Canyon near Tabantha Bridge Stable (-2919, 0546, 0169). From the Tabantha Great Bridge, jump down into the Tabantha Canyon. Head south towards coordinates -3486, 0170, -0105. There will be a large boulder in the middle of the clearing. Approach it, and the Stone Talus will emerge from the ground.

Stone Taluses only have one weakness: The Ore Deposit on its body. Most Taluses have them on their head. Since Stone Taluses (Rare) are a stronger variant, most of their Ore Deposit/weakness is located on their back.

The best way to fight this Stone Talus is to use Bomb Flowers or arrows fused with Bomb Flowers:

If struggling, Link can use Ascend on the Stone Talus and land on the Ore Deposit from the Talus' head.

Once it's defeated, the Stone Talus (Rare) can drop any type of gem (excluding Luminous Stones). Sometimes, it won't drop Topaz but instead drop Rubies or Diamonds. In addition to gems and flint, the Talus will also leave behind a Rare Stone Talus Heart. This item is too big for the inventory, so Link will need to fuse it to a melee weapon or a shield. Fusing a Rare Stone Talus Heart will increase the melee weapon's attack power and make it easier to break open ore deposits.

Topaz sells for 80 Rupees at any vendor. If players have 10 Topaz and have met the Gerudo merchant, Ramella, in Goron City, they can sell their 10 Topaz for 1000 Rupees. Keep in mind that Ramella will also buy 10 Rubies, Sapphires, and Diamonds. She'll cycle through these four gems at random, so it may take a while to circle back to Topaz.

Another way to use Topaz is to fuse it to a melee weapon or an arrow. Fusing it to weapons like the Magic Scepter will turn the weapon into a wand. Topaz-fused weapons (and all gem-fused weapons) fire electric projectiles each time they're swung. This is different from a weapon fused with an Electric Lizalfos Horn, which only damages the enemy with electricity when hit directly.

Finally, players can use Topaz to upgrade armor. Armor enhancements unlock when players start the "Serenade to a Great Fairy" side adventure at Woodland Stable. This is part of the "Potential Princess Sightings!" side adventure, which can be unlocked at the Lucky Clover Gazette outside Rito Village. There are four side adventures in all for the Great Fairies, and if players want to max out their armor's level, then they'll need to complete them.
